Android Support and Updates
Google Play and the Amazon Appstore require every app update to target a recent Android version, and the libraries TouchDRO is built on drop old Android versions over time. As a result, TouchDRO can support an Android version for a limited time, typically 7 to 10 years after its release, with the exact timeline set by Google and the app stores.
When support for an Android version ends, TouchDRO keeps running on tablets with that version, but it stops receiving updates. The app stores also stop offering the application to those tablets, so after a factory reset there may be no way to reinstall it. A tablet that is still inside its manufacturer's update window avoids both problems for the longest.
Recommended Devices
Most Android tablets released since 2017 (Android 7.0+) and every Amazon Fire tablet since the 2018 Fire HD 8 (Fire OS 6+) are compatible with TouchDRO as long as they meet the requirements above. There are hundreds of such tablets on the market, covering a wide range of sizes and price points. TouchDRO's user interface is designed primarily for screens of 9" or larger. The application works on smaller screens, but the readouts and buttons get cramped. The tablets that are known to work well are listed in the "Recommended Android Tablets" guide.
1. TouchDRO can be installed on a non-tablet device (a netbook or even Raspberry Pi) running Android 7.0 or later and used with keyboard and mouse.↩
2. The adapters sold on this site use Bluetooth. TouchDRO can also connect to a DIY adapter through a USB-to-serial bridge or over WiFi, as described on the "Connecting To TouchDRO Scale Adapter" page. Bluetooth is recommended because it is typically more stable and convenient in a shop. The app stores list TouchDRO only for devices that have Bluetooth and USB host (OTG) hardware, which includes practically every tablet made in the last decade.↩
