Recommended Microscopes and Cameras for Milling Machines
Using an inexpensive USB camera or digital microscope, you can turn your milling machine into a competent measurement microscope. The sturdy milling machine frame provides a solid and repeatable platform, and TouchDRO paired with good quality DRO scales provides the precision; the camera is used only for centering. A dedicated measuring microscope or a DRO with a camera option costs thousands of dollars. You can buy a UVC microscope for less than a decent edge finder.
In practice, this covers a surprising amount of work: reverse engineering an existing part (picking up its hole pattern to make a mating cover, for instance), measuring or inspecting a finished part without unclamping it, and laying out or checking small features under magnification.
TouchDRO works with most USB cameras and digital microscopes that support the UVC standard. The camera support itself is a TouchDRO Plus feature, covered on the "Live Camera Feed" page in the manual. This page includes a short list of models that we either tested ourselves or have received consistent positive feedback about from TouchDRO customers, along with advice on how to judge a camera that isn't on the list.
Our Recommendations
For most setups, we recommend an inexpensive "coin" or "soldering" microscope with a built-in screen and a USB video output. You can use one as a standalone microscope when needed, but for most work you will feed the video into TouchDRO and keep your eyes on one screen. As an added bonus, these microscopes come with an integrated LED ring light, so there is no lighting to arrange.
Basic 4″ or 5″ models cost between $35 and $60 and work well for reverse engineering work; for regular inspection and measurement use, a larger 8″ or 10″ microscope can be had for $150–$200. USB-only "barrel" models cost $30–$60. They give up the screen, but the compact body is easier to mount sturdily.

How to Choose a Camera
There are hundreds of cameras and digital microscopes on the market, and new models appear constantly. If you found one that isn't on this list, check two things in the description: does it mention UVC, and does it offer 720p or 1080p resolution (1280×720 and 1920×1080).
MJPEG support, sometimes listed as MJPG, is very good to have too. This is a video encoding format that sends every frame as a complete picture, so it creates less latency and jitter than the formats that send only the changes between frames. Listings sometimes loosely say "MPEG". It's technically a different thing, but sellers often confuse the two. Avoid models that offer only uncompressed video, listed as "uncompressed", "YUY2", or "YUV". USB bandwidth limits those to a few frames per second.
Look for UVC
TouchDRO works with UVC cameras. UVC is the standard that lets a camera work without a special driver or application. In practice, if a listing says the camera works on Linux, Android, or a Mac without installing anything, it is a UVC camera. Be suspicious of listings that only mention a Windows program or the maker's own phone app.
How Much Resolution You Need
For centering and digitizing, 720p is genuinely enough, and 1080p is plenty. At the working distance of a typical coin microscope the field of view is only a few millimeters across, so a 720p image works out to roughly 5μm per pixel: comparable to the resolution of the scales themselves.
The recommended modes don't ask much of the tablet either: even a 2019-era budget Samsung tablet handles 1080p MJPEG smoothly. H.264 and 4K modes need a newer tablet and add nothing for centering.
Furthermore, the extra pixels of a 4K camera have nowhere to go. The video pane on an 11″ tablet is itself only about 1080p worth of screen, so a larger image gets scaled down before you see it. Centering accuracy is set by the mount and the optical axis alignment: since only the center of the image is ever used, even field curvature and barrel or pincushion distortion don't affect the measurement. This is why a $40 microscope is not a compromise here. The mount itself is covered in the "Turning a Manual Mill into a Measuring Microscope" guide, along with a simple repeatability check.
Trying an Unlisted Camera
If you are trying a camera that is not on this list, purchase it from a place with a good return policy. Once you plug it into TouchDRO, you will know right away if it doesn't work, and can return it. Every camera failure we have seen is obvious within minutes: the camera is never detected, takes half a minute to show up, shows a black image in some modes, or delivers a slideshow instead of video. To check a new camera, open TouchDRO's "Camera Setup" dialog and test its modes with the camera pointed at a real part.
Just as important, there is no failure that quietly degrades your measurements. The position comes from the DRO scales, and TouchDRO only uses the video for aiming. A marginal camera makes centering annoying, but it can't make the numbers wrong. If the picture lags, picking a lower resolution mode fixes it. If the image is live and smooth, the camera is fine.
Plan on a Powered USB Hub
Buy a powered USB-C hub along with the camera, and treat it as part of the setup rather than a workaround. Many of these cameras have USB electronics built to a price, and tablets are far less forgiving of that than PCs. Several units we tested are not detected at all when plugged straight into the tablet's USB-C port, and some draw more current than a tablet port provides. The C-mount camera was one of those. A powered hub fixes both problems and charges the tablet while you work. A tablet that lives on a machine should be on charge anyway.
We use the Anker 5-in-1 USB-C hub (85W power delivery passthrough and powered USB-A data ports), and an Apple USB-C to HDMI/USB-A dongle also worked. Any powered hub of similar quality should do. What matters is external power and a real hub chip, not the brand.
All-in-One Digital Microscopes
The finished instruments are sold as "coin", "soldering", or "jewelry" microscopes, and those are the terms to type into the search box. Searching for a measurement microscope finds a different class of product entirely. Optics, lighting, a stand, and usually a screen are all included, and there is nothing to assemble. Models with a screen and the compact screenless "barrel" type both work with TouchDRO the same way. The pricing and screen tradeoffs are covered in "Our Recommendations" above.
The one we use routinely on our mill cost $40 in early 2026. A screenless USB model we also tested was $35 and works just as well through the tablet.
Note that the basic 4″ models we tested don't draw crosshairs on their own screens. The more expensive units usually can. Over USB this doesn't matter, since TouchDRO draws its own, better crosshair over the video. For standalone use you will need to improvise. Cameras with Interchangeable Lenses
Bare cameras make up the second group: board-level modules that take M12 lenses (such as the Arducam units we tested) and industrial cameras with a C or CS mount thread. These suit a setup you build yourself: the lens, the mount, and the lighting are all on you. Unlike the all-in-one microscopes, none of these come with a light. The usual fix is an LED or fiber optic ring light around the lens, and used fiber ring illuminators are cheap.
In the Spindle
If you need something small enough to hold in the spindle, a board camera with an M12 lens is the right starting point. In effect, you are building a video version of the optical centering microscope, with the image on a screen instead of in an eyepiece. It is more work than the other options, since you will be building the housing, the mount, and the lighting around a bare board. In exchange, the package stays genuinely compact: the two Arducam units we tested focus close enough that the whole setup, working distance included, costs less than 50mm of Z travel.
On a Dedicated Stand
The sharpest advantage of a dedicated machine vision lens is working distance. With a C or CS mount lens you can have 100–200mm between the lens and the part and still keep useful magnification. An all-in-one microscope has to sit right on top of the work. On an inspection stand, that space is what leaves room for your hands, the lighting, and taller parts.
Image quality is the second advantage. Good machine vision lenses genuinely outresolve the plastic optics in cheap microscopes. For centering that buys you nothing, but for high-definition capture or projection onto a large monitor it is the difference that matters. HDMI output is also real-time, where USB video picks up a small lag from being encoded and decoded. The C-mount camera we tested streams to both at once and draws basic crosshairs over HDMI, so you can watch the monitor for immediate feedback while TouchDRO captures over USB.
Budget for the whole setup, though: once the lens, the light, and the stand are added up, the cost gap against a $40 microscope is much bigger than the camera's price suggests. Used optics close some of that gap. Navitar 6000-zoom-class lenses show up on eBay for a fraction of their list price, and pairing one with a modest C-mount camera gets you a very capable inspection head.
Retrofitting a Microscope
For microscope retrofits, a C-mount camera or a trinocular-head camera is a good fit. Many trinocular ("tri") heads take an eyepiece-barrel camera directly in the photo port. The SVBONY SV105 and SV205 we tested are decent cameras of this type. Note that the eyepiece-barrel cameras only make sense here: they take no standard lenses and are awkward to bracket to a mill head.
We use both arrangements on our Nikon MM-40: a C-mount camera on its Navitar 6000 bracket with a fiber optic ring light, and an SV205 in the trinocular head.
